This is a tricky post to write as Bob the cat is walking over the keyboard! He also likes to watch progress from the roof of Netherton.
Right - between decorating the RL lounge and gardening (although the gardening is sporadic given the not so good weather we've been having), I've been doing some bits and pieces to Netherton. In fact I've been on a bit of a roll and items are popping up here and there.
Firstly, this is the Dining Room as it is now. I'm hoping you will note that the oval ceiling rose mirrors the design on the rug and I've taken it a bit further by having an oval dining table. I have the rest of the furniture and most of the accessories but I'm leaving all that for my next post.
Pictures/ancestors have been added and what a difference they make to a plain room. All of a sudden it comes to life.
There are still little areas to be touched up and finished off (namely the not so good angles on the cornice) but I ran out of wood filler!
The cupboard I created on the back wall has contents but because there are still more bits to be added, I'll show you all of that next time round. The door to the front right of the picture is the door into the Hall. It's not fixed in yet (nor is the over door decoration). That'll get done once I've started working on the Hall.
The picture below shows the "fourth wall". What a palaver that turned out to be as there wasn't enough space allowed to clear the floor (I thought I had, and I was convinced I had taken it into account when measuring but it all had to be taken apart, trimmed and put back together - lesson learned!) I'm thinking about putting cushions on the window seats to add a bit more colour but I'm not sure if cushions would have been included. I'll have to think about that one. Another major debate going on in my head is whether to have a tablecloth or not? Perhaps I need to get out more.
Moving on, there have also been a few additions made to the Still Room. I haven't, as yet, shown the fully fitted out Still Room and that is because it's not finished yet. The Kitchen isn't completed yet either but I can show you little areas. I jumped ahead to the Dining Room because I had a "good idea". Working on this property is so different from the others that I've done. Previously I've worked at a room until the whole thing is decorated and kitted out with all it's accessories. This time round, things are happening where and when the mood strikes.
The servant's bells were purchased from Miniatura some time ago and the Servant's Rules are there just to remind them all to toe the line!
They are placed at the end of the Servant's corridor to the left of the Still Room.
A view from the Kitchen looking toward the Still Room. Most of the furniture is in place but lots of accessories are still required to give it some life.
Another view from the Kitchen, this time showing the Servant's staircase/access to Dining Room above.
Looking from the Still Room into the Kitchen - a bit of an atmospheric shot.
and finally, with the lights on and a laden dresser.

You've done a lot in your house and apparently we're going to see more soon. I can't wait... The pictures in the dining room add alot to the room. this is the kind of house where there must be a lot of portraits. With the servants' corridor and the rest we really have the impression to be in a grand house like in Downton Abbey. You can be very proud of your work.

Hi Irene! Your house is coming along nicely! I think the pictures in the dining room do "bring it to life"! It's that human element I think! The colors are lovely and I really like the oval above and the oval underneath in that room! The still room and the kitchen are both looking promising....I love to see the in progress pictures as well as the completed room... I learn a lot about how a room is "layered" by seeing those steps! You always have the most amazingly precise idea of the accessories a space needs! I can't wait to see more!
ReplyDeleteBonjour Irene,
Hi Irene,
ReplyDeletegosh, Bob has quite a proprietorial look on his face from the top of your house - he doens't think it belongs to him, does he? (everything I have, apparently, belongs to my ginger tom Edgar... though he got a terrible row when he tried to curl up in Daviot House!).
I know what you mean about being on a roll, things either seem very quiet or very busy, I'm glad to see your progress on the dining room - the ancestor are certainly very important!
Can't wait to see the Still Room, very intruiging!
Jonquil
Your dinning room is gorgeous Irene. I love the pictures on the walls. The servants bells and rules are a fantastic touch. I cant wait to see more.

The dining room console and wall sconces are beautiful together, and the servants' bells are perfect. The kitchen/still room area is so realistic; just seeing the photos made me feel that I was on an actual walking tour through the rooms. You're doing very nice work.
ReplyDeleteHi Irene! I must say that Netherton is filling out Beautifully! I love what you are doing with the dining room but I especially like what you have done Below Stairs! The peek at the Still Room with the cloth draped over half of the table looks so authentic and the shot of the china filled cupboard in the kitchen is Drool worthy! You are very knowledgeable about all of those little extra details i.e. the servant's bells and the board of Servant's Rules are both Perfectly placed!
ReplyDeleteKeep going because you are On A Roll!!!! :D

Hello Irene,
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post full of amazing pictures. Your atmosphere shots are always magnificent...it really looks like real life room. I love it!
The rug is beautiful and works very well in the room. I agree that the portraits really make the room feel finished. As for the tablecloth, I love a wells et table, but I've often noticed that miniature china does not show as well on tablecloth, which back then were almost always white. Depending on your china set putting it directly on the table might be a good idea. Oh, and I love those servant bells. I have been looking for some for a while and those are wonderful.
Big hug,
Giac
Giac, thank you for your lovely comments. Still undecided re the tablecloth though and regarding the bells - they were purchased at a fair from a New Zealand seller and came loose in their box along with a little sheet of printed room names. I just had to add them to a board. The seller has no website and seemingly a trip to the UK with her minis was on her bucket list!
DeleteHello Irene
ReplyDeleteHow have I missed this post! Wonderful work and pictures, as usual. The portraits are so at home here! Your 'downstairs' is just fabulous and so true to life, I love it.
All the best
